Celebrating Presidents’ Day in Prague
AFOCR Director Emeritus Peter Bisek
On February 12, 2026, AFoCR Director Emeritus Peter M. Bisek joined Ambassador Nicholas Merrick and the Mayor of Prague 1, Ms. Terezie Radoměřská, in laying wreaths at the Woodrow Wilson Monument. Situated in the Vrchlický Park area facing the Prague main railway station (Hlavní nádraží), the original statue was erected in 1928 to thank US President Woodrow Wilson for his support in creating an independent Czechoslovakia in 1918. It was destroyed by the Nazi occupation forces in 1941.
The new, replica monument was unveiled on October 5, 2011, as a symbol of friendship between the US and the Czech Republic. The statue is a replica of the original created by Czech-American sculptor Albín Polášek. AFoCR (afocr.org) led the effort in returning the statue of Wilson to its rightful place.
