Daniel Baldwin

Dan Baldwin is President/CEO of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation (GCRCF), in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the second largest community foundation in Iowa. He was a 15-year museum professional before coming to the GCRCF in 2002. Most recently he was President/CEO of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids. Prior to that he was executive director of Old City Park Museum in Dallas, Texas, and oversaw Collections and Conservation at the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis.

Highlights of his six years at the NCSML include installation of the international exhibit A Thousand Years of Czech Culture: Riches from the National Museum in Prague ; installation of the museum's permanent exhibit, Homelands: The Story of the Czech & Slovak People ; inception of Slovo , the museum's award-winning history and culture journal; the development of a 2,000 square foot temporary gallery which was inaugurated in 2000 with the exhibit Czech Technology in Motion ; the renovation of the former museum building into the Collections Center; the doubling of the library collection; doubling of museum membership; and, leading the board of directors in the creation of a five-year strategic plan. In 2002, Dan received the Artis Bohemiae Amicis Award from the Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation has over 300 funds and assets of more than $60 million. In 2006 it made grants in excess of $4 million.

Dan is an Iowa native. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Iowa. Growing up only 50 miles from Cedar Rapids, he had only a passing knowledge of its large Czech community, though he has since learned of many personal connections he's had with Czechs since his youth, and on into his professional life in Dallas (where he used to schedule Czech dancers at museum festivals). His personal research has led to the publication of an article connecting Andy Warhol's pop art to his ancestral Slovak folk art. Dan is married to Anne Ylvisaker, a novelist. They have three children.
